Cell phones are everywhere. They are no more a status symbol that they used to be when they were introduced. The rapid proliferation of the cell phones across the world has made them ubiquitous even in small hamlets as in big towns and cities. Since a cell phone has become a cheap and popular communication device, its immense communication potential can be manipulated for nefarious designs. Cell phones can be used for academic malpractices, corporate espionage, antisocial, terrorist and disruptive activities and much more.
The older analog editions of the cell phones were easily amenable to reception and transmission controls by using simple interference techniques such as high frequency noise induction etc. But the digital cell phones that have succeeded the analog phones work on the sophisticated and advanced technologies and are immune to the primitive silencing measures used in the traditional cell phones. That is where the cellular phone jammers come in. They are technologically advanced enough to match the complicated technical manipulation of the digital cell phones.
Functions of a Cell Phone Jammer
A cell or a cellular phone jammer is a device that is used to obstruct the cellular phones from receiving and transmitting information or signals to the base station. Cell phone jammers were originally developed for use by the military and law enforcement authorities to monitor and interrupt communications of the criminals and the terrorists. Their popularization led to their civilian applications. The cell phone jammers are now used by public departments and private bodies to disable all the cell phones operating in the targeted area. The objective of using the jammers is to control the disruptive or incendiary use of the cell phones. The locales which the jammers usually target are the places of worship such as churches, temples, mosques, libraries, movie theaters, classrooms, examination centers, conference and meeting rooms and other areas where silence needs to be observed.
Jammers come in very handy in situations where complete silence is expected but some people do not know when to use the cell phones when to stop talking through them.
The modus operandi employed by the jammers to block the operation of the targeted cell phones is to transmit the radio waves at the same frequency that the cells phones use. The clash of signals at the same frequency causes interference and disruption in the communication of the cell phones. The jammers can even stop the different brands of the cell phones from receiving and transmitting signals to the towers, by either disrupting the phone to tower frequencies or vice versa.
The effective radius of the cell phone jammers can range from a dozen feet to several miles for the more advanced and dedicated units. The TRJ-89 jammer can block cellular communications for a 5-mile (8 km) radius
The hand held smaller versions or pocket models of the jammers can block all the bands from 800mhz to 1900mhz within a 30 foot range.
While the old jammers could work on the phone standards of the analog phones, or, the earlier digital mobile phones, their newer editions are the double and the triple band jammers. They, therefore, can obstruct all the widely used cell phone systems such as AMPS, iDEN, GSM and so on. Not only that, these jammers can act effectively against the latest cell phone models that keep on changing their frequencies and systems when interfered with.
The premier network technology and the frequencies that operate the cell phones are different from region to region, For example, the cell phones in North America and Europe work on different frequencies. Therefore the counteractive jamming technology is also region specific.
Even in the same region, the power of the jamming technology depends on various factors such as the distance of the jamming device from the transmission towers, the indoor and outdoor settings, obstruction caused by the tall buildings, the landscape, the temperature and even the humidity. All these factors work to varying degrees. Besides, the jammers can interfere with the functioning of the medical devices such as pacemakers installed in the heart patients and others. The cell phone jammers can, therefore, disrupt the radio spectrum to cell phone users within the radius of its effective range.
Cell phone jamming technology has paid rich dividends in many crucial situations. It is quite well known that a cell phone jammer defeated the attempt on the life of Pakistan President General Parvez Musharraf in December 2003. The British police used cell phone jammers for the security of President Bush’s convoy through London.
France legalized the use of cell phone jammers in cinema halls, concert halls and places of public entertainment. The country is finalizing the jamming technology so that while it can disrupt the illegal use of cell phone communication, it should not interfere with emergency calls for ambulances or other urgent help.
India has installed cell phone jammers inside the Parliament hall and in some prisons. The Italian universities have also introduced cell phone jammers to thwart cheating in the examination halls.
